Anorexia Nervosa (Typical and Atypical)

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of gaining weight, a distorted body image, and extreme efforts to maintain a low body weight through restrictive eating, excessive exercise, and/or other behaviors like purging. Individuals with anorexia often perceive themselves in a distorted way despite being significantly underweight, leading to severe physical and psychological consequences. It commonly affects adolescents and young adults, particularly females, though it can occur within any age group, gender, or ethnicity. Symptoms include drastic weight loss, preoccupation with food, calories, or body shape, and physical signs like fatigue, hair loss, or amenorrhea (loss of menstrual periods). Effective anorexia nervosa treatment typically involves medical, nutritional, and psychological interventions. Additionally, it’s important to note that other conditions like avoidant restrictive food intake and binge eating disorder can also affect individuals, and specialized support is available for those seeking bulimia nervosa support. The dietitians at Healing Nutrition Therapy have experience and expertise working with anorexia nervosa and other eating disorders, including diabulimia treatment. Like all mental health struggles, it can feel overwhelming to find support. Just know that you are not alone in your struggle with AN, and our expert team of dietitians is here to help.

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating—consuming large amounts of food in a short period with a sense of loss of control—followed by compensatory behaviors to prevent weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting, excessive exercise, fasting, or misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or other medications. Individuals with bulimia often have a distorted body image and an intense fear of gaining weight, though they may maintain a normal or abnormal weight. Symptoms include preoccupation with food and body shape, secretive eating, and physical signs like sore throat, dental erosion, or electrolyte imbalances. It commonly affects adolescents and young adults, particularly females, but can occur in anyone. Treatment typically involves psychological therapy, nutritional counseling, and medical management, which can also encompass anorexia nervosa treatment or avoidant restrictive food intake strategies. If you suspect you or a loved one is struggling with Bulimia Nervosa (BN), Healing Nutrition Therapy is here to help provide bulimia nervosa support. You might be wondering how to begin this recovery journey. It’s possible you haven’t yet opened up about your struggle with food or perhaps you are looking to add a dietitian for binge eating disorder help to your treatment team. Healing Nutrition Therapy is a team of expert eating disorder dietitians. We provide high-quality eating disorder treatment for all eating disorders, including diabulimia treatment. We help support clients to build a secure and comfortable relationship with food and body.

Binge Eating Disorder

Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)

Binge eating disorder (BED) is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of consuming large amounts of food in a short timeframe, often accompanied by a sense of loss of control, and without regular compensatory behaviors like purging or excessive exercise. Individuals with BED frequently eat rapidly, consume food when not hungry, or continue eating until they feel uncomfortably full, often leading to feelings of guilt, shame, or distress afterward. Unlike bulimia nervosa, which includes routine purging or other weight-control measures, BED can result in various physical and emotional health issues. It affects people of all ages and genders, typically emerging during adolescence or early adulthood. Treatment usually includes psychological therapy, nutritional counseling, and sometimes medication, similar to anorexia nervosa treatment or support for bulimia nervosa. For those seeking binge eating disorder help, Healing Nutrition Therapy offers specialized support through nutrition therapy and counseling. Our experienced dietitians are well-versed in the complexities of binge eating disorder treatment and provide compassionate care to guide clients toward recovery, while also being aware of related conditions such as avoidant restrictive food intake and diabulimia treatment.

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is an eating disorder characterized by a persistent avoidance or restriction of food intake, leading to significant weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, or impaired physical or psychosocial functioning. Unlike anorexia nervosa, which is often addressed through specific anorexia nervosa treatment options, ARFID is not driven by body image concerns or fear of weight gain. Instead, it may stem from sensory sensitivities (e.g., aversion to certain textures, smells, or tastes), fear of adverse consequences (e.g., choking or vomiting), or a lack of interest in eating. Common in children but also affecting adults, ARFID can result in dependence on supplements or tube feeding, growth delays, or social isolation. Symptoms include limited food variety, avoidance of entire food groups, and anxiety around eating. While this disorder is distinct from binge eating disorder, individuals may seek binge eating disorder help for related issues. Treatment for ARFID often involves behavioral therapy, nutritional support, and addressing underlying sensory or psychological issues, similar to the support offered in bulimia nervosa support programs. If any of these questions resonate with you, it’s possible that you or a loved one is struggling with ARFID. Through a compassionate, patient, and highly trained approach, we at Healing Nutrition Therapy can guide you or your loved one through the process of slowly expanding on your preferred foods using a variety of treatment methods, which may also include diabulimia treatment for those managing diabetes.

Orthorexia

Orthorexia

Orthorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by an obsessive focus on eating foods perceived as "healthy" or "pure," leading to restrictive eating patterns that can harm physical, psychological, or social well-being. Unlike other eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, where weight loss or body image are primary concerns, orthorexia involves an extreme preoccupation with food quality, nutritional content, or rigid dietary rules. Individuals with orthorexia may avoid entire food groups, meticulously plan meals, or feel intense guilt or anxiety when deviating from their self-imposed dietary standards, similar to those struggling with avoidant restrictive food intake. This can result in malnutrition, social isolation, or emotional distress. While orthorexia is not formally recognized in the DSM-5, it is increasingly acknowledged in clinical settings and can affect people of any age or gender. Treatment typically involves psychological therapy, nutritional counseling, and addressing compulsive behaviors, much like the anorexia nervosa treatment and bulimia nervosa support. Living in a society obsessed with “healthy eating” complicates matters, as we are constantly bombarded with messages about cutting calories and monitoring food choices. Consequently, orthorexia often goes undiagnosed. It's crucial to recognize that food should not dominate your time or energy. If your relationship with food is distracting you from being present with loved ones, causing anxiety, or preventing you from living according to your values, it may be time to seek support. Those in need of binge eating disorder help or diabulimia treatment can also benefit from reaching out. If you or a loved one is struggling, connect with our highly skilled clinicians here at Healing Nutrition Therapy, who can support you on your recovery journey.

Diabulimia

Chronic Illnesses: Diabetes Type I & II, Hypertension, Kidney Disease, Celiac and Heart Disease

Diabulimia is an eating disorder where a person with type 1 diabetes deliberately restricts their insulin to lose weight, similar to the behaviors seen in anorexia nervosa treatment cases, or when a person with type II diabetes allows their blood sugars to run alarmingly high. As a consequence of this dangerous method of weight loss, individuals with Diabulimia experience out-of-control blood sugars and can develop a number of serious and potentially life-threatening medical complications. Even though the medical complications that can result from Diabulimia are severe, many people often do not consider treatment because they don’t realize they have an eating disorder. Primary care doctors and other healthcare professionals may mistakenly assume their patient is taking insulin as recommended. Those suffering may experience feelings of shame, guilt, and sadness, which can lead to difficulties in discussing their eating disorder behaviors, including avoidant restrictive food intake. Getting help for Diabulimia treatment can prevent these issues and allow you to live a healthier, fuller life.

As a team of eating disorder specialists led by an Inclusive Eating Disorder Specialist Registered Dietitian (IEDS), we understand the complexities of Type 1 Diabetes alongside the struggles of an eating disorder and body image issues. Our approach includes therapy and treatment interventions that are flexible and effectively address the needs of both diabetes and the eating disorder at the same time, similar to the support provided in bulimia nervosa support programs. Treatment takes time and is a gradual process. However, once in recovery, you will absolutely be able to enjoy a fulfilling and productive life, with options for binge eating disorder help if needed.

Chronic illnesses are enduring diseases that come in all shapes and sizes, affecting individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds. While the medical community has made significant strides in understanding chronic illnesses, there is still much to learn. If you've been diagnosed with a chronic illness, having a supportive team is crucial. Our Registered Dietitians at Healing Nutrition Therapy specialize in helping individuals with chronic illnesses navigate nutrition, especially when they also face challenges like anorexia nervosa treatment or bulimia nervosa support. For many of our clients, issues such as avoidant restrictive food intake or seeking binge eating disorder help can make managing nutrition within the context of a chronic illness even more confusing and overwhelming. We also offer diabulimia treatment for those who need it, ensuring that all aspects of your health are addressed.

Athletes with Eating Disorders

Athletes with Eating Disorders

Athletes with Eating Disorders

Proper nutrition is fundamental in achieving optimal health and top-tier athletic performance. The high incidence of eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and avoidant restrictive food intake among athletes is not accidental and can have devastating effects on both their health and performance. The tendency to recognize eating disorders in females more readily than in males makes the detection of these issues in male athletes even more challenging. Athletes often ignore signs of potential health complications and injuries that they know could be attributed to their eating disorder behaviors, all for the sake of success in their sport. What they fail to realize is that they are, in fact, hindering their overall success and athletic performance.

When an athlete has an eating disorder, they often struggle with a combination of restrictive dieting, overtraining, and not allowing themselves to rest on recovery days. They may miss out on family events and social activities to fit in additional training sessions, often developing an exercise addiction. Coaches, athletic trainers, parents, and others involved in an athlete’s training regimen are instrumental in helping to identify, treat, and prevent compulsive exercise and eating disorders. They must be properly and consistently trained in what to look out for in their athletes. We understand it can be very difficult to approach a child or adolescent’s parents when there is a concern. We are available to help with this and develop a plan for assessing and communicating what is going on with the athlete to their families, coaches, trainers, and especially to the athlete.

We work with the suffering athlete to develop an eating plan that properly fits their athletic lifestyle and create goals for recovering from their eating disorder, whether it be anorexia nervosa treatment, bulimia nervosa support, or binge eating disorder help. Educating athletes struggling with an eating disorder on how nutrition impacts sports, exercise, overall health, and athletic performance is critically important and an ongoing task. Only when you give your body the fuel it needs by drinking enough water and eating a balanced diet will you be able to maximize your athletic talents and achieve the goals you have in sight. Similarly, we can create a plan for addressing exercise addiction or compulsive exercise behavior, including diabulimia treatment.
